At P&A Paws, our lead wraps and vests are more than just cute—they’re a clear way to communicate your dog’s needs in a world that doesn’t always listen. Whether your dog is working, reactive, or just needs a little extra space, the right phrase on their gear can make a huge difference.

Here are our top 5 gear phrases (and when to use them!):

1. “Do Not Distract”

Perfect for : Assistance dogs, dogs in training

This phrase tells people not to touch, talk to, or engage with your dog while they’re focused on their handler. Even eye contact can be distracting when your dog is doing important work—this wrap is a polite but firm boundary setter.

2. “I Need Space”

Perfect for : Reactive dogs, nervous dogs, or dogs in training.

This one speaks volumes with just three words. It’s a kind way of saying, “Please don’t let your dog rush up to mine,” without having to explain every time. Great for both on-lead walks and busy areas.

3. “Training in Progress”

Perfect for : Puppies, young assistance dogs, or dogs working on social skills

Sometimes people assume training only happens at home, but real-world training is just as important. This tells the public, “We’re learning—please don’t interrupt.” Pepper wears this one a lot when we’re out!

4. “No Dogs”

Perfect for : Dogs who are reactive, selective, or working and easily distracted

If your dog is leash-reactive, resource-guarding, or just not a fan of dog-to-dog interactions, this phrase is essential. It can also help keep irresponsible off-lead dogs away—something Archie really appreciates!

5. “Medical Alert Dog”

Perfect for : Fully trained assistance dogs performing life-saving tasks

This phrase clearly states your dog is working in a medical capacity. It can help reduce access issues and encourage people to respect boundaries. If your dog assists with seizures, blood sugar, or cardiac alerts ect this phrase is powerful and necessary.

Every dog is different, and their needs deserve to be heard—clearly and kindly. At P&A Paws, we make custom lead/chest wraps and vests that reflect your dog’s personality and their needs. You don’t have to keep explaining—let the gear do the talking.

A Note on Public Understanding

While clear phrases on dog gear can be a big help, it’s important to remember that they don’t always stop unwanted attention. Some people will ignore warnings or feel entitled to interact with your dog no matter what their gear says. This can be frustrating and even unsafe — especially for assistance dogs, reactive dogs, or dogs in training.

But that doesn’t mean the gear isn’t worth it. Every clear message helps educate the public, protect your dog, and give you the confidence to advocate for your dog’s space. Even if just one person reads a vest or wrap and gives you more room, that’s one more step towards making the world safer and more respectful for all dogs.
